Geoff Slattery’s answers!

What was the first BMX movie you saw?
poor boy 500 miles
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
i was blown away. i knew that you could do tricks and jump little bumps in the street but it was definitly eye opening to see what people could actually do on a bike.
Who’s parts were most memorable?

I would have to say Stuart King and Ron Kimler.
What has been your most watched Bmx movie and why?
Criminal mischeif.
What is your favourite Bmx movie if not the one above and why?
hmm I would have to say criminal mischeif, its got every kind of riding, with amazing group of riders. and having van homans epic section to top it off doesnt hurt either.
What was the last Bmx movie you saw?
That would be the birth of big air.
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
Holly shit! it made me want to build a huge quarter and try it for myself.
Who’s parts were most memorable?
The whole thing was amazing .
How much impact do you think Bmx movies have now?
I think they mean alot to certain people. riders that have put time and work, and know what it takes to put an entire video together can appreciate a well put together video, as opposed to the little web edits everyone puts out every week.

Scotty’s answers:
How much impact did Bmx dvd’s have when you first started riding?
BMX video’s had a massive impact on me when i first started riding, things were so different back then, you didnt have constant web coverage of everyones latest tricks and web edits popping up all over the place, you would just be treated to a full on 45 mins or so of crazy stuff that you’d never seen before.
What was the first BMX movie you saw?
Well it was way back in what must have been late 1992, myself and a group of friends all gathered around the TV to watch Ride On and Matt Hoffman Headfirst, it was crazy!!
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
Just one of those films in a night would have been enough to make us wanna go out and do crazy things on our bikes but after watching the 2 of them we all went out and were doing all kinds or stuff, from trying to ride street like Vic Murphy to doing the weird stuff that Eddie Roman was doing at the time. The next day we went straight up to the vert ramp and tried to ride like Matt Hoffman, im pretty sure we were all buzzing for weeks after watching those 2 films.
Who’s parts were most memorable?
The riders that stood out for me were Vic Murphy and Hoffman. As far as im concerned Matt is the best vert rider ever, he was the original stunt man, you see footage of him trying flairs onto a mattress. The mattress is on the flat bottom of the ramp!!! There’s never gunna be a good out come in that situation but he just lets it fly. Vic Murphy is the man, if there was a choice between watching him doing a table and watching the newest trick ferret bust some new “sick” move……. i’d choose the table anyday!!
What has been your most watched Bmx movie and why?

Thats a tough one. I’d say it would have to be Headfirst. When i was growing up all i really rode was the local vert ramp, so obviously watching Headfirst was the natural choice. I used to wake up early in the morning and watch that video before i went to ride vert, then i’d come home for lunch and watch it again just to see what i could try next. I couldn’t and still can’t get enough of that video now.
What is your favourite Bmx movie if not the one above and why?
I really cant narrow it down to one video sorry. Both the Union video’s were the bollox, those videos are just a bunch of goons having fun on bikes. Anthem…. for obvious reasons….it’s amazing. Road Fools 1, theres a great quote in that video where someone says that in one day they’d brought street riding forward about 10 years, i remember being stunned at the stuff Joe was doing on street. Any video with Van Homan in. The list could go on… Agro Man, The Bar Is Closed, Broken, the T1 video, Live Fast Die, Dirty Deeds……….
What was the last Bmx movie you saw?
I think it was the newest Fit video, Stay Fit….i think.
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
All the riding in the video was amazing but alot of it didn’t really appeal to me. If the BF and Van Homan sections weren’t on there i wouldn’t have liked it at all.
Who’s parts were most memorable?
Van’s part defenetly. That boy isn’t scared and he also rocks a gyro! RESPECT!!!

How much impact do you think Bmx movies have now?
They don’t have as much impact on me, but i cant speak for other people. I’m sure all the up and coming whipper snappers love all the new videos but I’m just not into them. But really good videos are few and far between now. Plus you’ve got the internet which is always full of new people and there web edits. I never really watch any of the new stuff, i’ll stick with the old classics. Bring on Anthem 2, if it’s anything like the first then it might just break the mold and be a good new old style video.

How much impact did Bmx dvd’s have when you first started riding?
Videos did make a huge impact on me when i first started riding, mainly because that was the only way you could watch bmx as it wasn’t in the media at all.
What was the first BMX movie you saw?
There was this old tv show called high five and one of the episodes was about Matt Hoffman, that was the first thing i saw of bmx. Not really a bmx movie, the first proper one I watched was s&m 44 something.
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
Well stoked! My friend had it on VHS and i watched it until it stopped working.
Who’s parts were most memorable?
Can’t really remember it having actual sections but for me Keith Trennor stood out the most. I met that dude about 7 years ago when i was in cali, he was crazy. He was sat on this dudes coach screaming slayer at the wall.
What has been your most watched Bmx movie and why?
Probably scum Lights out, that was the first video someone bought for me. I got it for christmas one year and loved it. Butcher and Winklemen sections were sick!
What is your favourite Bmx movie if not the one above and why?
Would have to be Lights out
What was the last Bmx movie you saw?
Animal cuts
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
Was a little bit long for me
Who’s parts were most memorable?
Thought Dave belcher and Nigels sections were real solid
How much impact do you think Bmx movies have now?
For me nowhere near as much as they used to, i tend to watch a lot more skate videos these days.

Clint Reynolds answers has also been around a good while under the East coast sun shine, heres what he had to say about his visual influences from past and present.
How much impact did Bmx dvd’s have when you first started riding?
A huge impact, I remember pedaling my bike vast distances to the bike shop just to buy a video.
What was the first BMX movie you saw?
Thunder, I was probably in Elementary school.
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
I didn’t think that it was even possible to do that on a bike, I was blown away. It made me want to ride so bad.
Who’s parts were most memorable?
probably all the trail riding. All the stuff at posh was sick. Back in those days all I new was trails, I couldn’t even spell feeble grind.
What has been your most watched Bmx movie and why?
I would have to say seek and destroy. The sound track was sick as well as the riding, Stauffer holding those tabes never got old.
What is your favorite Bmx movie if not the one above and why?
Who brought the Dudes. Brian Yeagle and Derrick Girrard made that movie for me, both big influences in my riding.
What was the last Bmx movie you saw?
Bone Death by Sean Burns.
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
Holly smokes that was sick, and pretty weird.
Who’s parts were most memorable?
Definitely Seans part for the obvious reasons, everyone had a really solid part. I think there is going to be a Bone Death movie that comes with the riding dvd, I can’t wait to see that.
How much impact do you think Bmx movies have now?
Not nearly as much as they once had before the Internet, and sites like the come up. I still think they have there place but not like the once had.

Saw that!

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

We have got a new thing running here where we asked some team riders and various affiliates questions about BMX movies both past and present. Answering this time around we have Coxie “BMX Inferno is one of the main reasons that I became so obsessed with the S&M Bikes”and The Head “watching footage early sheep hills day’s and Bo’s made me the person i am today”.

How much impact did Bmx dvd’s have when you first started riding?

When I first started riding it was BMX VHS’s! They had a huge impact on me, I mean we didn’t check the internet or anything - so every time say a new Props came out, there would be a huge leap in the riders’ progression, and you would notice styles changing more obviously. I remember on a few occasions getting the train to the nearest bike shop just to pick up a new video, then I’d just session it for weeks - you’d learn all the quotes, try to find all the songs, it was awesome. So yeah, I guess the answer is that they had a really large impact on me, as far as that the early videos I watched such as Nails In The Coffin(Bicycle Union), On The Down Low, the Scum videos, Nowhere Fast, Thunder, BMX Inferno, The old Seventies videos etc etc all moulded my taste in music, what bikes I’d be into and what sort of riding i liked - I wanted to ride trails like the guys in 1201, and then when I started riding street around 1999, I based my riding on what I saw in the Ells Bells videos, you know, like what Ratboy and Gonz were doing, all the no brakes stuff etc - and for the most part since those days Im still into the same shit. I mean obviously my taste has evolved and tweaked itself over time, but it was pretty much all built on the foundations of what I watched in those old videos.

What was the first BMX movie you saw?

I think that the first video I actually sat down and watched in it’s entirety was Standard Domination.

What feeling did you have after you watched it?
Well before I’d seen Domination, I’d seen bits of old Props videos, a few parts of an old Push video called Tweakers, and that Cheeky Monkey video called A Tense Nervous Headache - but for me, Domination was a whole different league. I remember the pace of the video and how cinematic it seemed at the time just blowing me away!
Who’s parts were most memorable?
Punjab’s part was fucking amazing, best double cans and supermans - Bobby Fisher had that street part set to Metallica that I really liked, at the time that seemed pretty groundbreaking…Rick Moliterno had my favourite though, I loved how there was all this fast paced shit in there, like he was tearing down the street and just nosebonking stuff, I loved it, it looked like so much fun. Even when I hear that song come on now, I want to go tear off down the street and nosebonk something haha
What has been your most watched Bmx movie and why?
It’s going to be a tie between S&M BMX Inferno and Dirty Deeds. Those two have definitely had the most plays to date, closely followed by Nowhere fast and On The Down Low. All the above VHS tapes are pretty much fucked now from overuse.
What is your favourite Bmx movie if not the one above and why?
I’d say it’s probably BMX Inferno. BMX Inferno is one of the main reasons that I became so obsessed with the S&M Bikes - the team at that time seemed to have so much attitude and the soundtrack was fucking unbelievable too, especially that Melvins song, June Bug at the beginning when Catillo is cruising through that car park at night in the intro. I liked all the little clips that were in between the sections too, like Levan fighting, Moeller cutting that dude off at the race track then doing that dance, all that stuff that just seemed crazy to me at the time. It all just made me want to be those guys when I was growing up. They just seemed like a bunch of punks and I just wanted to be a part of it! Nowadays when I watch that video it reminds me of when I was a kid and we rode trails all day, Love it.
What was the last Bmx movie you saw?
I just watched the new Animal / A* Bike Co. DVD - Cuts
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
I absolutely loved it - It’s the first video I’ve watched in a long time that made me want to instantly go riding.
Who’s parts were most memorable?
Well I’ve only watched this DVD a handful of times, but so far I’d have to say Mike Brennan, Ratkid, Edwin, Bob and Nigel. And Marv obviously!
How much impact do you think Bmx movies have now?
Impact on the BMX public? I couldn’t say. Probably less than they used to? But some new videos continue to have an impact on me personally. I know how much work goes into making a video, and I love seeing the way different people approach it. Making any video at all is a pretty positive, inspiring thing, and I guess that alone has an impact on me. I think from a riding point of view it’s different because you see so much of it online, which kind of takes the edge off it all when a DVD comes out - Like you already know exactly what that rider is capable of before you even see his section, because you see them online every week. I like it when you don’t see footage of someone for a long time then they have a crazy part in a full length DVD - then I think it still has that impact.

How much impact did Bmx dvd’s have when you first started riding?
Massive amounts… watching footage early sheep hills day’s and Bo’s made me the person i am today, in the way it made me start digging dirt jumps back then we only built step up fly out’s then we saw footage of rows of doubles and was like what the fuck!?
What was the first BMX movie you saw?
It was dirty deeds back in 94.. was so rad.
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
So pumped… we would used to watch Mike Griffin and try 180 bars and and truck drivers, many stitches in my legs!
Who’s parts were most memorable?
Mike Griffin’s part from s&m inferno. that guy was so ahead of his time like if you put that video part out now people would be talking about it, or marvin lotterle’s part from s&m video 4… just love how livid and pissed off he gets so exciting to watch!
What has been your most watched Bmx movie and why?
S&m inferno… was 95. I was 15 last year at school and would watch it every day and try learn the stuff butler was doing…back when life was way easier.
What is your favorite Bmx movie if not the one above and why?
Nails in the coffin(Bicycle Union)…first english video that had trail footage from the east coast which made our trails what it is now.. and Jerry Galley!
What was the last Bmx movie you saw?
Stay Fit.
What feeling did you have after you watched it?
Is that it! didn’t know what to expect but it wasn’t that! the riding was super but the soundtrack weren’t.
Who’s parts were most memorable? BF and van’s part price less.
How much impact do you think Bmx movies have now? defenetely not as much as it did back in the 90’s back then it was about riding with your buddies and hucking some tricks…now a days it can make or break you! don’t means as much to kids now a days as it did back then i know it doesn’t for me.
